Big 'S' for Sophistication
PC WORLD SINGAPORE
November 2002

Like the other members of the Fujitsu S series, the S6010 is built on Fujitsu's "Sophistication" theme. It comes in a sleek and slim magnesium alloy body that weighs just 1.7kg and measures 293 x 236.5 x 26.5mm. It's fitted with a Mobile Intel Pentium III-M 1GHz processor, 512MB SDRAM (supports a maximum of 1024MB), and a large 40GB hard disk.

At both sides and rear of the S6010 are various system ports for audio (microphone in, line in, headphone), PCMCIA (Type I or Type II x 2), IEEE1394 FireWire, Ethernet, V.90 modem, 2 USB, infrared, VGA out and docking for a Port Replicator.

The Port Replicator is an external attachment that offers additional ports similar to a desktop PC - VGA out, 2 PS/2 mouse/keyboard, serial parallel, USB, external floppy drive and RJ-45.

The S6010 also features a 13.3-inch XGA TFT colour screen that supports a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. With an integrated VGA graphics, the unit offers a clear, sharp display. Other features include programmable launch buttons (Internet, email and two other software applications), full-size keyboard, and a touch pad with scroll button.

The LifeBook comes with a hot-swappable DVD-ROM and CD-RW combo drive module. This provides users with an option to backup their data easily onto their CD-R and CD-RW media and play their favourite DVD movies. The drive module can also be replaced with optional modules such as a second hard disk, extra battery, PC slot, Superdisk or weight saver.

The unit gave an overall score of 114 points in the BABCo Sysmark2001 benchmark tests - higher than other notebooks we've reviewed in this category. It scored 121 and 108 points for Internet Content Creation and Office productivity, respectively. Such performance may be partly attributed to its 512MB of memory.

It achieved moderate results in the MadOnion 3Dmark2001 and Quake III: Arena benchmark tests, but this is not an issue because the system is not designed for 3D gaming. Rather, it has sufficient power to run standard applications such as Word processing, Excel spreadsheet and the like. It is also fitted with the necessary components that allow mobile users to be connected to the Internet.

The Fujitsu S6010 is going for S$3888 (w/GST) and comes with a one-year international limited warranty.
